Monday 5th March 2012 - Strahan - Lake Burbury

Ed and I were up early packing to get organised for the boat cruise. Packing up a wet trailer is heavy work and we were both getting a bit over it, however we soldiered on!
We were rewarded for our efforts with a wonderful cruise down the river. It was wonderful! We firstly went out to Hells Gates, followed by the old convict prison on Sarah Island, a cruise down the Gordon River and a Huon Pine walk. We had a lovely buffet lunch and the kids all enjoyed turn being Captain of the Boat! (Thank goodness they had a trained a real captain to guide them!)

Me on the River Gordon. It was so beautiful. I am thankful to Bob Brown and his mates  for saving this whole place and helping to make it a World Heritage area.
Some of the convict ruins on Sarah Island. Part of the trip included a 1 hour stop over on the island. Our tour guide was very entertaining in bring to life the stories of some of the convicts and the staff from Sarah Island. We all loved the tour as he picked out different people in the group to play roles. Ed was an escaped convict who returned to his life of crime as a bushranger! It was a lot of fun hearing all the stories.

We got off the boat around 3pm and headed straight for Queenstown. It continued to rain and we did consider a motel for the night, however, there were none available for us so we moved on. Queenstown is a very plain town compared to all the beauty we had seen before. We camped at Lake Burbury and met another family travelling around Australia. They were from Melbourne and heading in the opposite direction to us. Their kids Zara and Sasha enjoyed a play with our kids. It continued to rain again overnight. We are so over the rain!!!
This tea towel was a gift from my friend Nicole before I left Perth. I really needed it after all this rain. We feel water logged!
