Wednesday 7th March 2012 - Lake St. Clair - Mount Fields National Park

We decamped after breakie and tried to warm up along the road. We moved onto the Mount Fields National Park. Its main claim to fame is the Russell Falls. They were also spectacular. It involved approximately a half hour walk up to the falls. Along the way Ed and the kids were spotting trout in the river. After viewing the falls we climbed up further along the path to the top of the falls and looked down on the falls.

Once you are at the top of the falls you move around the corner and you see some other smaller falls called Horseshoe Falls. Following on we went on another walk to look at some very big trees.
Horseshoe falls

he base of one of the trees that had fallen down. It was a huge tree!

We continued up the road to a small town called Maydena. Just out of town is a cave called Junee Cave. We parked next to a pretty river and trekked down to the cave. Of course Ed jumped the railing and climbed into the cave from the boardwalk to have a closer look. One by one he took us down into the cave to look around. We managed to see a couple of the largestest spiders in Tassie. They have these webs which look like cargo nets!
Difficult to see!

As the location was very nice we decided to camp by the river for the night. Ed and the kids collected worms and went for a fish. We were rewarded with some trout! We also had a camp fire and cooked some marshmallows. Everyone was happy....especially Olivia as it was 1 sleep till her birthday!
During the night Ed checked the fire only to see some Possums keeping warm by the fire!
